The natural key or business key is the key of a table as defined within a source system.

A compound key uses multiple columns within a table in order to uniquely identify a single record.

A primary key is the key of a table in order to uniquely identify a single record. It can consist of one column or a combination of columns.

A surrogate key or technical key is an artificially created numerical key without any business meaning. These keys are used within a data warehouse environment in order to easily combine tables.

Ideally a data mart is derived from or based on a data warehouse architecture, in order to ensure data consistency throughout the organisation.
